It didn't take long for this group to understand substitution. Someone even made a connection between our review of Order of Operations and said, "this is like when you told us to underline in the problem and then the next line we wrote what that part worked out to be."

They then began and worked through the "Find the Sub" activity and did a great job. I created 9 variable expressions that when substitutions were made correctly they simplified to 54. I then gave a list of variable values, students had to use their problem solving methods to figure out the value of each variable.
