To help us review today we used the wheels to pick our problems and tell us to add, subtract, multiply, or divide.

SUBSTITUTION & FIND THE SUB ACTIVITY

It didn't take long for this group to understand substitution. Someone even made a connection between our review of Order of Operations and said, "this is like when you told us to underline in the problem and then the next line we wrote what that part worked out to be." YES!!!!!!! They then began and worked through the "Find the Sub" activity and did a great job. I created 9 variable expressions that when substitutions were made correctly they simplified to 54. I then gave a list of variable values, students had to use their problem solving methods to figure out the value of each variable.

MATH KEYWORDS SCATTERGORIES

Everyone divided their paper into 4 quadrants. One each for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Then we used wheeldecide.com to choose our letter. Students tried to come up with a word that no one else had. Those that were successful earned bonus points. It made a somewhat dull topic become fun.

PARTS OF EXPRESSIONS

At this point students are beginning to learning the different parts of expressions, thus far they have made it clear that they know the terms for solutions to addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems. They are also proficient at reading an expression in word form and translating into a mathematical expression.
